Oral Health and You

Hygiene and dental care are a must to keep your teeth in the best possible shape.  At Fresh Pond Dental Clinic in Cambridge, we want to be sure you have the information necessary to do just that. So, here are a few words of wisdom to help you and your family maintain those bright smiles.

Oral Hygiene Equipment

  1. The right toothpaste is important. In our Cambridge dental clinic, we recommend toothpaste with fluoride to help protect tooth enamel and fight tooth demineralization.
  2. For a toothbrush, go with a soft-bristled brush that enables you to reach and clean your mouth comfortably. Battery-powered toothbrushes can reduce plaque and gingivitis more than using a regular brush.
  3. Remember that flossing is essential to clean those hard-to-reach places between your teeth and beneath the gum line.
  4. Mouthwash is also needed for good oral hygiene. Select one with fluoride for added protection.

Flossing is Simple

This once-a-day activity can help you maintain a cleaner mouth and prevent gum disease and tooth decay. Flossing before you brush will clear any food particles that remain between your teeth and enable more of your gum line to be cleaned while brushing.
Make sure you have enough floss, about 18 inches. Run it back and forth, between and around each tooth, getting just below the gum line. But be careful not to hurt yourself.

Brush At Least Twice Daily

Brushing twice a day is essential to maintaining a clean, bright smile. Ensure that when you brush, you clean the gum line where it meets the teeth. Between teeth and gum line are the most problematic areas susceptible to cavities caused by gingivitis, also known as gum disease. Gum disease plagues 75 percent of adult Americans and is the cause of periodontitis. It has even been linked to heart disease and stroke. So brush thoroughly.

Use Fluoride Mouthwash

Using mouthwash correctly is a must. After brushing your teeth, pour four teaspoons of mouthwash into a cup and gargle with it. Do not swallow! After 45 seconds, spit it into the sink.
