What Happens After You Get Your Implants?

Following your implant surgery at Fresh Pond Dentistry in Cambridge, it is critical that you do not bite on the tooth that has been implanted. On occasion the healing abutment or cover screw may loosen or completely fall out; this will not affect your implant stability. If this occurs call the office so we can replace it for you free of charge.

Pain/Medications/Swelling:

Take over-the-counter medicines like Tylenol, Ibuprofen, Advil and/or Motrin for pain. Please follow the package directions for dosage information. If the pain does not ease after three days or if the pain increases, please call our office.

If you have been prescribed a medicine for extreme pain; please note that this medication may make you tired and can cause slower reflexes.

If you were prescribed an antibiotic, please finish your prescription regardless of your symptoms. Unless you have a rash, then stop taking the prescription and speak with an associate at our office for further instruction.

Swelling may develop within 12 to 24 hours following your surgery, and frequently occurs on the third day.

Ice packs are recommended for the first 48 hours following the surgery. You may apply ice regularly while you are awake in thirty minute intervals.

When Bleeding Occurs:

Bleeding and oozing can be common following the operation and potentially for the next 24 hours.  If bleeding occurs, do not panic, place a sterile gauze pad on the surgical site and gently bite down for thirty minutes intervals until the bleeding has stopped. If active bleeding persists please call Fresh Pond Dentistry in Cambridge for further advice.

Things to Avoid:

Vigorous chewing

Do Not Rinsing or Spitting for the first 24 hours following your surgery.

Do Not Smoke

If you were prescribed an antibiotic, please finish your prescription regardless of your symptoms. Unless you have a rash, then stop taking the prescription and speak with an associate at our office for further instruction.

If all is followed, the healing time should be pain-free and a successful surgery can be guaranteed.
