The Solution to Excessive or Uneven Gums

Many people feel excessive or uneven gums detract from their overall looks. When first impressions are a daily part of your life, this can have enormous repercussions. There are two causes for uneven gums and different treatments for both.

What is Excessive Gingival Display?

If when you smile in the mirror your gums rest too high or low on your teeth, you may have excessive gingival display. It occurs when an overabundance of gum tissue covers a larger portion of your teeth than normal. Excessive gingival display can be due to genetics and even certain prescription drugs.

Treating Excessive Gingival Display

To make your smile as attractive as possible, a cosmetic dental procedure called gum contouring can remove excessive gum tissue and sculpt a new gum line to enhance your smile.
Initially, a local anesthetic is applied to numb the region of gum tissue. Unwanted tissue is then removed and pockets between teeth adjusted to ensure appropriate root coverage. In extreme cases, bone along the front of one or more teeth may be removed to achieve long-lasting results.

What is Gum Recession?

When your gums have receded, leaving much more of your teeth revealed, the cause is normally a Gum recession often occurs due to a variety of factors:

Treating Gum Recession

Depending on the cause and severity of your gum recession, you may need to learn less harmful brushing techniques, which your dentist in Camridge  can teach you. In more extreme circumstances, surgery may be necessary to prevent gum recession from progressing and rebuild root protection.

The three main corrective procedures are:

  • Pocket depth reduction – Infected gum tissue and bacteria are removed from the pockets. Then healthy tissue is secured in place over the tooth roots.
  • Regeneration – If bone loss has occurred, pocket depth reduction will be conducted and regenerative graft tissues or tissue-stimulating proteins applied before securing the gums over the roots.
  • Soft-tissue graft – Healthy tissue is cut from the roof of the mouth or other parts of the gums and stitched into the gum tissue around the exposed root.

To receive a personal assessment of your gum recession or excessive gingival display, consult your local dentist.
