The Familiar Face of Gingivitis
This is a periodontal disease caused by bacteria within the mouth that infect the tissues surrounding the teeth. While not devastating at first, it can lead to very unhealthy and painful problems later on. In our Cambridge dental clinic, gingivitis is a familiar condition, but we have developed effective preventive measures and treatments to stop it.
What are the common causes of gum disease?
Your mouth consistently makes a clear, sticky substance called plaque. Plaque is composed of bacteria. The bacteria break food and sugar into acids that eat away at your teeth and infect gum tissues. There are also other causes of gum disease such as poor oral hygiene, family medical history of dental diseases, tobacco use, some medications and illnesses. Even hormonal changes during pregnancy, puberty, menopause, and monthly menstruation can increase the likelihood of gingivitis.
How do you know if you have gingivitis?
Gingivitis causes the gums to swell and often to become red and irritated. Swollen gums will bleed easily while brushing your teeth. It can also cause persistent bad breath, receding gum lines, and pockets between the teeth and gums. Many times, this will loosen teeth. However, since gingivitis does not generally cause pain, people often do not seek treatment until the periodontal disease gets much worse. If untreated, it will become tartar and require a dental hygienist. At Fresh Pond Dental, we have a hygienist waiting to help you.
What if you already have gum disease?
If good oral hygiene isn’t adequately maintained, plaque will spread beneath the gum line and damage the bone supporting your teeth. In these cases, gingivitis has reached a further stage in periodontal disease called periodontitis. This is a more severe form of periodontal disease that can result in tooth loss.
If not treated quickly, you will need the assistance of a restorative dentist. At Fresh Pond Dental we have specialists in every dental area you need.
