Ceramic Onlays and Inlays - What Are These?

Ceramic onlays and inlays are normally used to cover/reconstruct a damaged tooth. Done right, the repair work is seamless and cannot be felt or seen. The difference between traditional composite filling material and the ceramic counterpart is that the later will create a totally natural appearance and can be used when more than half (50 percent) of the tooth surface has been damaged.

The best advantage these types of fillings have over the traditional types is its strength; it can increase the strength of the tooth by as much as 75% and the reconstruction can last up to 30 years. These procedures can be performed by our Cambridge dentist .

What Is the difference between the Ceramic Onlays and Ceramic Inlays?

Both onlays and inlays are applied using the same procedure; one or maximum two sittings are required to complete the process. Before applying the ceramic onlays and inlays an impression is taken of the affected tooth by biting into a mold filled with putty to obtain the exact impression. With the help of this mold impression, the inlay/ onlay is manufactured in a specialized dental lab.

Until the ceramic filling is ready, the tooth will be covered (during the first sitting) with a temporary inlay/ onlay known as “temp”. This is removed at the time of the second sitting and the customized ceramic filling is attached.

The difference between these two types of dental fillings is their placement. The ceramic onlays are used to cover the tooth which suffered extensive damage and involves significant reconstruction work. On the other hand, inlays are attached to the inside-part of the cup (the tooth’s recessed area).

Top Advantages of the Ceramic Inlays and Onlays

The main reason why these ceramic onlays and inlays are so popular is that it provides the best fit with the teeth since it is customized in the lab before application to the teeth surface. Other top advantages are as under:

  • Has the same color as the teeth hence, the repairs are invisible. This hugely improves the aesthetic aspect besides repairing the teeth.
  • The makeover is extremely durable and requires minimum maintenance and/ or repairs.
  • The ceramic onlays and inlays do not lose their color even after 30 years of use as they are easy to clean, hence it is a worthwhile investment.
  • They provide support and additional strength to the teeth.

Disadvantages of the Ceramic Inlays and Onlays

There aren’t many disadvantages with these types of fillings. The only downside is that since the material is very rigid, it sometimes fractures when too much pressure is applied – say, by biting down on something hard.
