How to care for your recent Tooth Extraction:

Following a tooth extraction with Fresh Pond Dentistry in Cambridge, you may experience swelling during the first 24 hours. Try to relax as much as possible and avoid all strenuous activities during that day.

For Pain:

  • Take over-the-counter medicines like Tylenol, Ibuprofen, Advil, and Motrin for pain relief. Please follow the package directions for dosage information. If the pain does not ease after three days or if the has pain increased, please call our office.
  • If you were prescribed an antibiotic, please finish your prescription regardless of your symptoms. Unless you have a rash, then stop taking the prescription and speak with an associate at our office for further instruction.
  • To aid in alleviating pain/swelling, apply an ice pack for the first six hours following your extraction. You can apply ice regularly while you are awake in short fifteen minute intervals.

Please try to avoid:

  • A blood clot will form on the site of the extraction. This clot is vital to the healing process. Avoid touching the extraction site with your fingers and/or tongue.
  • Do not rinse your mouth after the surgery.
  • Smoking is prohibited before and after surgery.
  • Refrain from eating spicy foods.
  • Do not drink through straws.
  • Avoid all alcoholic beverages.

Things You Should Do:

  • Drink plenty of fluids.
  • Use pillows to elevate your head.
  • Place gauze sponges over the bleeding areas.
  • Change gauze pads as frequently as possible until the bleeding has stopped.

If you feel a persistent throbbing pain in the jaw, you may be experiencing ‘dry socket.’ This typically occurs three to five days following the extraction as a result of premature dissolving or loss of the blood clot. Call the office if this occurs.

If all is followed, the healing time should be pain-free and a successful surgery can be guaranteed.
